It is my opinion that this world more and more often is characterized by selfishness.

I do not know if it is a self defense, or if it’s just due to poor upbringing. However, I will emphasize that it is something that really annoys me.

How do this selfishness express itself? Below are some episodes from my daylife where it has expressed itself:

1) Deadline

Why is it so hard to meet a deadline? I call it a lack of structure, laziness and selfishness. Why start on Friday, when a project must be delivered on Monday. Especially when the person had more than a month to do the job …

2) Me, my self and I culture

I had been looking forward very much to that dinner. The happiness disappeared quickly when I got the most self-absorbed woman by my side doing the dinner. By asking her three questions she talked about herself for 2.5 hours. I got no opportunity to interrupt her. At no point, she asked: What I do in my everyday life? What makes me happy? Or what …?

3) Keep an appointment

Back in September, I had to help a friend with some reputation management. Though he lived 40 minutes away I offered to drive all the way up to him. 20 minutes before I should arrive, he called and said, that he had another appointment. I call it selfishness and lack of empathy. I took it, however, with head erect and we just found another day. When the same thing happened third time, I decided to remove him as friend on Facebook and considered not to talk to him anymore. He is a good example of the “me, myself and I-first generation”

4) Do not pay on time

One of my old customers a lawyer contacted me recently and asked me to make a report. When the report was finished and the next steps should be planned, I was called to a meeting. Having the meeting arranged made me happy. Once being there the only thing he focused on was the growth of his law office, and that this was the reason why he didn’t have enough cash flow to pay me on time. I call it selfishness and taking care of own interests first. It is not ok with me in such a situation.

5) Relationship and marriage

Take a look at all the relationships and marriages, which are breaking up. I heard recently that 40% were divorced. In my opinion this is caused to the fact that many are no longer able or willing to compromise with there one and only. Why can’t it just be like old times? Selfishness?
